The Beginnings of Health Sciences Charter School

On August 18, 2010, Health Sciences Charter School (HSCS) opened its doors to an inaugural class of 9th-grade students, establishing a dynamic learning environment focused on preparing young minds for careers in the health sciences. From its inception, HSCS has been dedicated to providing an intellectually rigorous college-prep education, offering students the opportunity to earn NYS Regents or Advanced Regents diplomas along with dual credit courses.

With the support of our valued healthcare industry partners, HSCS has created a curriculum that blends classroom instruction with hands-on experience. Our students gain exposure to the healthcare field through specialized coursework, laboratory-based research, mentoring programs, and real-world internships. The school's foundation was built on the urgent need to address the critical shortage of skilled healthcare professionals in the Buffalo Niagara region, preparing students to enter high-demand careers as doctors, nurses, medical technicians, therapists, pharmacists, research scientists, and more.

Growth and Innovation

Over the years, HSCS has evolved to provide even greater opportunities for our students. In the 2023-24 school year, we began training each Senior Class in CPR certification, ensuring that all graduates leave HSCS with this essential life-saving skill. In 2025, thanks to the Stronger Connections Grant, we launched a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program, allowing students who complete the course to graduate with a CNA certification—giving them a direct pathway into the healthcare workforce.

Our commitment to excellence was reaffirmed in 2024 when Health Sciences Charter School received its first five-year charter renewal from New York State, a testament to our success in preparing students for their futures.

A Bold Vision for the Future

HSCS is not just looking ahead—we are building the future. Currently, we are working to expand from a 9-12th grade school to a full K-12 institution, with plans to welcome our first Kindergarten and 1st-grade classes in the 2026-27 school year. This expansion will allow us to nurture students from their earliest years, fostering a lifelong passion for learning and healthcare.

Beyond academics, our school has seen incredible achievements in athletics. Under the leadership of Athletic Directors Shaquille Dudley and Tyree Parker, our athletics program has thrived, producing multiple championship-winning teams and instilling a spirit of excellence in our student-athletes.

Our community has also grown in leadership. Our Board of Trustees now includes 15 dedicated members, among them one of our very first graduates—returning to help guide the next generation of HSCS students.
