Today in history: Mary Eliza Mahoney

As the first licensed Black professional nurse in the U.S., Mary Eliza Mahoney knew that "firsts" are only meaningful if they open the door for others. She dedicated her life to building a seat at the table for everyone.

On May 7th, 1879 Mary Eliza Mahoney was born. She went on to become America’s first licensed Black professional nurse. She also co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses.

Congratulations to our very first phlebotomy training course students! They are now nationally certified and recognized Phlebotomists. Led by alumna Aniya Bryant, who is paving the way for future success, our next course begins May 18th at Healthway. We are so grateful for the support of this program, which creates vital career opportunities for our alumni and the community.

Dr. Ferdinand has spent over 40 years proving that heart health is a right, not a privilege. As a champion for cardiovascular equity, he reminds us that a great clinician treats the patient and the community.

On April 26th, 2024, Dr. Ferdinand was honored for his 40-year career as a cardiologist dedicated to eliminating racial disparities in heart health.
The “Supreme Court & My Hometown” program is now accepting applications for the Fall 2026 semester.

This semester-long program will take place at the U.S. District Courthouse in Buffalo or Rochester and offers students the chance to:

Learn directly from federal and state judges, attorneys, professors, and historians
Explore how Supreme Court decisions impact everyday life
Collaborate with students from across the district
Participate in field trips and hands-on learning experiences
Create a capstone project to educate your community
Students will specifically study the landmark case West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943) and its impact on First Amendment rights.

Eligibility Requirements:

Current 10th–12th grade students (for the 2026–2027 school year)
Must obtain one academic reference
Application Deadline: May 29
