History of Health Sciences Charter School

On August 18, 2010, with an inaugural class of 9th graders, a brand new charter school opened with an emphasis on preparing students for careers in the health sciences.

The Health Sciences Charter School offers an intellectually rigorous college-prep education with NYS Regents or Advanced Regents diplomas and dual credit courses. Backed by the strong hands-on commitment of our area healthcare industry partners, Health Sciences exposes students to career opportunities through a specialized classroom curriculum, laboratory-based research, mentoring programs, and real-work internships.

The impetus for founding Health Sciences was the critical shortage of skilled workers to fill the many health-related positions that remain unfilled in the Buffalo Niagara region. These include doctors, research scientists, psychologists, nurses, medical technicians, therapists, pharmacists, health information technology specialists or technicians, case managers and numerous other skilled personnel needed to keep hospitals, other health providers and biotechnology companies fully staffed with qualified workers.

Growth of the Staff

As the school has grown in size, from the initial class of 100 to today's 480 students, so did the staff. What started as a small group of 10 educators has grown into a family of 70 working together to create a positive educational experience for young adults.
